CELLS UPI Strengthens Its Role as Co-Host of International
Microcredential on Lesson Study and Instructional Coaching

Bandung, Indonesia

The Center for Excellence of Lesson and Learning Studies (CELLS) Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia played a strategic role as co-host of the Executive Professional Microcredential 2026 – Batch 1, held on 1–8 April 2026 in Bandung, which was collaboratively managed by the Indonesia Association of Lesson Study (ALSI) and the Malaysia Association of Lesson Study (MYALS).

Carrying the theme “Lesson Study and Instructional Coaching for Professional Learning Communities”, the program brought together school supervisors and university educators from Malaysia in a structured professional learning experience.

As co-host, CELLS contributed not only to the academic substance of the program but also to the design of learning activities that connected theory, classroom observation, reflection, and action planning. The program included seminars on the learning crisis, professional learning communities, lesson study fundamentals, instructional coaching moves, open lesson observation, reflection sessions, and video- and transcript-based lesson analysis. This structure reflects CELLS’s long-standing commitment to making classroom learning visible and improving teaching through evidence-informed collaborative inquiry.

The event also involved key figures from partner institutions. Malaysia was represented by Encik Mohd Rodzi bin Selamat from the Ministry of Education Malaysia and the District Education Office SISC Plus, as well as Dr Zanaton binti H Iksan, Chairman of the Malaysia Association of Lesson Study. From Indonesia, Arif Hidayat served in his dual capacity as President of the Indonesia Association of Lesson Study (ALSI) and Head of CELLS UPI, while Prof Ida Kaniawati represented the Directorate of Innovation, Downstreaming, and Science Technopark (DIHS) of UPI.

CELLS’s role as co-host is significant because the microcredential was designed not as a ceremonial event, but as a practice-based professional program. Participants were invited to engage directly with research lessons, coaching-oriented reflection, and cross-institutional dialogue. Through this role, CELLS demonstrated its capacity to convene international collaboration while maintaining a strong focus on classroom improvement and teacher professional learning.

This workshop and, at the same time, part of the microcredential program also reinforces CELLS’s position as a regional hub for lesson and learning studies. By co-hosting a program with international delegates and partner associations, CELLS continues to expand its contribution to sustainable professional learning communities and to the wider transformation of educational practice.
